enri Matisse was one of the most influential artists of the 20th century. While many painters of his era strove to depict the horrors of the world, Matisse chose to celebrate life. His bold use of color and spatial relationships continue to inspire creative minds over a half a century after his death. Matisse was a great painter, but he didn't paint like others of his time. Yet despite his considerable success, as his quote indicates, this "apartness" always bothered him.
As long as humans create art there will be those who believe that depictions of the grim and the ghastly are the only true topics for a "serious" artist. As for me, I believe there will always be a place for those who cannot dwell in the darkness but are driven to uncover and explore the magic that surrounds us, regardless of the prevailing "norms" of the times.
Running your own business is a task fraught with responsibilities and hard decisions. Taking your business seriously is a job requirement; taking yourself too seriously is a job hazard. Like Matisse, it has sometimes bothered me that I am unable to do business like everybody else. Sometimes things at Queensboro do get a little messy, but at least it is my mess. I wouldn't trade the smiles, friendships, and all the customers we have made happy for all the money in the world.
